“A man is known by the company he keeps” goes the old saying. The same is true of words also. The word ‘or’ has no exception. When it appears in the question paper, it is always welcome. ‘Answer question i or ii’, the examiner so kindly offers a choice. When my mother showed the  two photographs and asked me, “You can choose this girl or the other girl”, my mind soared to great heights. ( I have to admit what pleasant thought ran through in my mind – why not both girls?. In that context, the use of ‘or’ appeared to be redundant ). The same word ‘or’ takes a menacing force when combined with ‘else’, in the threat by a robber, “Show me where you have hidden the gold, ‘or else’…”
