Look at the stone artist at Mahabalipurm, India. He slogs his way day in and day out chiselling an image of God on an unyielding piece of rock. He doesn’t get paid adequately for his dreary work. But the man who smuggles the idol out of the country gets a reward. The antiques dealer in a western country sells it for a fortune. The millionaire who buys it for an astronomical sum doesn’t worship it – the primary aim for which it was created in the first place, but keeps it as a display piece of his immense wealth.
