Tongue Inertia

What is tongue inertia? Laziness of the tongue. What? Could tongue be lazy? Like any organ of the body, the tongue could also be lazy. Have you heard of the ailment “laziness of the eye?” Are you confused? There certainly is an ailment called laziness of the eye. For many people, it goes undetected for their life. If the parents are careful enough, they notice it and take the child to an experienced ophthalmologist. He prescribes suitable spectacles with an opaque glass for the more active eye and a normal glass for the less active eye. In that way the lazy eye is forced to work till it catches up with the other. (In the case of paralytic attack, the normal leg which is growing too fast is clipped by surgery so that its growth is limited to keep pace with the paralytic leg. The idea is both the legs become more or less of the same height and the limp is not particularly noticeable. No doubt the child will be short in stature after full growth). Well, we shall come to laziness of the tongue. You can notice  a slur in the pronunciation for some people. Why does it happen? One reason is there may be some physical defect in their tongue. We are not talking about such defect. In other cases, there may be hearing defects and the individual may not be able to hear the words properly and the reproduction of the language may also be imperfect. What this article is about is pure laziness of the tongue where all other faculties are in right order. The reason for speech defect is i) His parents also speak like that. ii) The individual himself/ herself may not be using his tongue properly or the tongue may not be co-operating with him. What is the remedy for that? Like any other organ of the body, the tongue also needs exercise. Reading a passage in any language is a good exercise. Probably the sage Arunagirinathar had such people in his mind when he created his famous verses in praise of God – கந்தர் அநுபூதி, திருப்புகழ், எல்லாம்.

Let us come back to English. Read the following sentences:

She sells seashells by the seashore

Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers
